• Tongue Placement: Bite blocks can help in improving tongue placement and control. By providing a stable surface for the tongue to rest against, they encourage proper tongue positioning, which is essential for producing specific speech sounds accurately.
• Jaw Stability: Bite blocks also promote jaw stability by keeping the upper and lower jaws in a fixed position. This stability helps individuals focus on other aspects of speech production, such as articulation and airflow, without having to worry about excessive jaw movement.
• Articulation Practice: Bite blocks are often used during articulation therapy. They can be customized to accommodate specific speech sound errors. By adjusting the size and shape of the bite block, speech therapists can target specific sounds and help individuals practice correct articulation techniques.
• Oral Motor Control: For individuals with weak oral motor control or difficulty controlling tongue movements, bite blocks can provide the necessary support. They can aid in strengthening the tongue muscles and improving overall oral motor skills, which are crucial for speech production.
• Sensory Feedback: Bite blocks can offer sensory feedback, helping individuals become aware of tongue and jaw movements during speech. The tactile sensation provided by the bite block can enhance proprioception, allowing individuals to develop a better understanding of their oral movements and make adjustments as needed.
